Independent Funchal Guide for Cruise Passengers
A full self-guided blueprint from gangway to all-aboard in Funchal.
Funchal is one of the Atlantic's most rewarding ports for independent exploration. This guide gives you a realistic self-guided framework from the cruise terminal through the Old Town, Mercado dos Lavradores, wine lodges and up to Monte — with return-to-ship discipline built in.
Start by orienting at the cruise terminal on Funchal's waterfront. The Old Town (Zona Velha) is roughly 15 minutes' walk east along the seafront. Walk past the Marina and the Praça do Município square. The Painted Doors project on Rua de Santa Maria is your first cultural encounter — dozens of local and international artists have transformed doorways in the Old Town lanes.
Mercado dos Lavradores is 5 minutes further east from the Old Town — visit before 11am for the best atmosphere and fully stocked stalls. Try the passion fruit, pitanga and other subtropical produce. The fish counters are a sight in themselves: espada (black scabbardfish) and tuna dominate. Pick up poncha liqueur at market stalls or specialist shops nearby.
Taxi guidance: short city rides EUR 5–12. Blandy's Wine Lodge on Avenida Arriaga is a 15-minute walk from the terminal and accepts walk-in visitors. The cable car base is in the Old Town near Babosas station — return by toboggan to Livramento (15-min descent) or cable car. From Monte, taxis back to the port are readily available. Set a turnaround alarm: aim to be back at the terminal area 75–90 minutes before all-aboard.
